Cookie policy

Last reviewed: 7 September 2026.

This page explains what cookies and similar technologies this site uses, why, and how
to control them. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003
(PECR)
, anything that is not strictly necessary to provide the service you asked for requires
your consent before it is set — so analytics and advertising cookies are only placed if you agree.

The short version, as of 7 September 2026. This site sets one
cookie, and only after you have used the consent banner: the banner’s own record of what you chose.
There is no analytics package and no advertising network installed, so there is no analytics or
advertising cookie to set. We checked the response headers of a first visit: nothing is sent to your
browser before you choose.

1. What a cookie is

A small file placed on your device by a website, which can be read back later. The same rules apply
to similar technologies such as local storage, pixels and device fingerprinting, and this policy covers
all of them even where we say “cookie” for brevity.

2. The categories we use

Strictly necessary

Needed to deliver the site and to remember your cookie choice. These do not require consent, and
they cannot be switched off without breaking the site.

Analytics

Would be used to count visits and understand which pages are read, so we know what to write next.
None are in use today — no analytics package is installed. If one is added it will be
set only with your consent, and listed in the table below before it goes live.

Advertising

None are in use today — no advertising network is loaded on this site. When
advertising is added it will be contextual (matched to the page you are reading)
rather than personalised (matched to a profile built from your browsing across sites). That is a
deliberate choice, explained on how we make money. Any cookie an
advertising provider needs will be set only with your consent, and will appear in the table below
before it is switched on.

Functional

The consent banner offers a fourth category, for optional features that remember a preference.
Nothing on this site uses it at present.

3. What is actually set on this site

Measured on the live site on 7 September 2026, by reading the response headers of a first visit
and the settings of the consent tool. This is the complete list.

Nothing else is set. There is no analytics cookie, no advertising
cookie and no third-party cookie of any kind on this site today. If you never touch
the banner, we store nothing at all on your device.

WordPress, which this site runs on, sets cookies for the people who log in to write it. As a reader
you never log in, so those are never set for you.

When advertising is switched on, its rows will be added to this table before it goes live,
measured on the real site rather than copied from a provider’s boilerplate.

4. How to change your choice

You can change or withdraw your consent at any time using the small permanent cookie icon shown on
every page, which reopens the banner. Withdrawing consent does not undo processing that already happened with your consent.

You can also control cookies in your browser — blocking them, deleting them, or using private
browsing. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working.

5. Third-party cookies

There are none at present. No third party sets a cookie through this site today.
If analytics or advertising is added, the cookies those providers set are read by them and not only by
us, their own privacy policies govern what they do with the data, and this section will name each
provider and link to its policy before anything is switched on.

6. Do Not Track and global privacy signals

Browser “do not track” headers are not consistently honoured across the web. Our consent tool can
honour the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal; that option is not switched on yet,
and this line will change on the day it is. In the meantime nothing that GPC would block is running on
the site anyway.

7. Your rights and complaints

Cookies that process personal data also engage the UK GDPR — see the
privacy policy for your rights and how to exercise them. PECR and the
UK GDPR are both supervised by the
Information Commissioner’s
Office
, and you can complain to the ICO at
ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.

8. Changes

We update this page whenever the technologies on the site change, and we re-measure the cookie
table when we do — not once at launch and never again.
